Levon Aronian took an early lead at the Masters Final in Shanghai by beating local star Wang Hao in the first round. Vladimir Kramnik had Alexei Shirov on the ropes, but couldn’t convert a long-lasting advantage.

Levon Aronian is the world’s number 4 player in the world on the September FIDE rating list. The Armenian is now one place higher than Vladimir Kramnik, who lost ten points in Dortmund this summer. Pavel Eljanov is now 6th while Vassily Ivanchuk is back in the top 10.
